Fitzgibbon Charrette: DILLY & Dally
The 2026 Fitzgibbon Charrette, “Air Space,” was organized by Catie Newell. “Air Space” is about flowing air and an
effort to allow our spaces to literally breathe,
articulating presence in reference to the
qualities of the immediate atmosphere. The charrette invited students to use repeatable components to design for air as an inhabitant.
As a response, Dilly & Dally explores the idea of “catching” the air in a playful manner, as if the wind is caught up in a friendly game of catch with itself. The project celebrates interactions and play: between the air, the viewer, and the components. The air is given agency, defining the space and its form, playing a game with itself. Humans are allowed in as actors, able to interact directly with the piece and experience the play with optics. The components are arranged in different formations, responding to their own form and engaging in conversation with the air by affecting the speeds at which the piece moves. Through this ongoing negotiation between the air, the viewer, and the components, Dilly & Dally ensures no two interactions will ever be the same.
The work below was undertaken in collaboration with Maya Broughton over the period of a single weekend.
