Laskey Charrette: Between Stones & Stars
The 2025 Laskey Charrette, organized by Miroslava Brooks & Daniel Markiewicz, invited participants to think of volumes and thresholds. The assigned brief called for the design of a framing model of a series of thresholds for two connected interior volumes. They asked that each volume be designed for a single and specific inhabitant, with three types of thresholds: one for entry, one for light and one for connection with their neighbor. The work below was undertaken in collaboration with Selayni Toribio, Ryan Nieman, and Rebekah Shin over the period of a single weekend.
"Reach for the sky but keep your feet on the ground."
The project revolves around Pete and Albert — two characters who contradict one another in various ways. Because Pete is an introverted geologist, his personality is reflected by the sunken in, more closed off rectilinear space, providing him peace and quiet while literally “grounding” him into the earth. In contrast, Albert is an extroverted astronomer whose space extends towards the sky with larger apertures to accommodate his interests in the stars. These two men can constantly meet at their shared threshold to discuss their findings, furthering interest in a field they both share, planetary geology.
